Operation C.A.R.E. is an annual, donation- and volunteer-based activity devoted to the repair and rehabilitation of historic homes. It was started in 1997 to help owners of historic homes that have a fixed or limited income. Grants and local sponsors allow Landmarks to offer this program at no cost to the homeowner.
The program targets the many smaller houses that make up a large part of the historic fabric of our community which are often allowed to deteriorate beyond a reparable condition. Qualifying homeowners receive exterior repair work to their homes and volunteers help to prime and paint. Landmarks wants to ensure that no historic homes are lost to neglect and that homeowners are able to stay in their homes for many years into the future. Although Landmarks organizes it, this is truly a community project.
In its over 20 year history, over 55 structures have been repaired and painted by more than 1500 volunteers. More than $185,000 committed in grants, donations and services have resulted in over $600,000 worth of historic preservation.
