The Landmarks historic home plaque program has recognized scores of homes and businesses. Plaques are given to residential and commercial historic buildings that retain their historic appearance. To be eligible for a Landmarks’ plaque, a house must be on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. It must be 50 or more years old. It also must be restored or maintained in a manner that represents good preservation practice. Property owners should consult the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation for an explanation of what is meant by good preservation practice. A copy of the Standards for Rehabilitation is available to read at the Landmarks office.
This plaque program recognizes the effort that people put into maintaining and restoring their property, as well as the historical significance of the property. Requests for plaques are reviewed by Thomasville Landmarks before research begins.
The cost of your plaque includes the research necessary to date and document your structure. You will receive a brief description and summary of your property with your plaque. The shield shaped plaques are made of 3/4” AZEK, a synthetic material that will stand up to weather, and measure approximately 15” high and 11” across. Allow 3-6 months for research. Upon receipt of payment, your plaque will be sent for painting and you will be notified when it is ready to be picked up. Landmarks does not provide any hardware for mounting; most home owners attach the plaque directly to their house.
