In 1850, German immigrant Otto Lange constructed a house and shop at the corner of Broad and Remington Ave, using shop space as the site of his watchmaking business. These 1-story wood-frame buildings remained until the early years of the 20th century when W.L. Ball erected the present 2-story brick building located at this intersection. Over the years, the building housed a wide variety of businesses – Thomasville’s A&P Supermarket and for a time, the local Chamber of Commerce.
In 1949, the building was acquired by Belks Department store, with the property serving in that capacity well into the mid-1970s. As Belks located to the Gateway Shopping Center, the Ball Building was occupied first by discount retailers, a series of antique malls, which was then followed by a long period of vacancy.
In 2022, the property was acquired by Kelly and Heather Abbott, who sold the property to TJ Callaway as the new home for Onward Reserve. Building rehabilitation involved architect Bill Edwards who guided interior design and the recreation of the building’s original storefront.
