Burbank Cottage

2023 Award of Outstanding Achievement
Lauren & Hinson Arwood

Burbank Cottage was constructed in 1885 as a winter residence for Mrs. Evelyn L. Burbank of Wisconsin. The house is constructed in the Victorian Gothic style with 4 rooms on the first floor and 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a dressing room on the second. The prominent façade turret is an attic. The home’s board and batten siding is original and was painted barn red with blue shutters at the time of construction. The solarium, located to the rear of the house, was constructed by previous owner Dr. Ben Grace in the early 1980s.

With elements of Queen Ann and Stick styles, the Cottage is situated on over an acre in Thomasville’s Tockwotton Historic District. The home has unique architectural elements including the two-story gambrel roof, a three-story tower, and an orangery set in the main house, which was a fashionable safe haven for citrus fruits during the winter during the 19th century.

The interior detailing is spectacular with board and batten paneled walls, heart pine flooring, and custom millwork found throughout.  A large open kitchen is flooded with natural light and overlooks the deck area and beautifully landscaped yard beyond. Other amenities included a two-bay garage with work shop and tremendous storage as well as an orchid house.

Today, Burbank Cottage is the private residence of Mr. & Mrs. Hinson Arwood.
